You’ve been hearing about meditation for some time now and might wonder: Why are people doing this? And why should I? Here are a couple of reasons for you to start the practice of meditation right away.
Happiness can only surface from our own acceptance of what is happening to us right now. In french happiness is called “bonheur” which literally means a good hour...that’s it...one hour. It does not involve any past or future, but only the present moment.
By practicing meditation, we increase our innate ability to look at what is happening right now, in the present moment. It helps us to stay in the here and now, to be alive, and therefore to be happy ☺
Our desire for happiness is universal, you, me, our family and friends...everyone wants to worry less and have some simple moments of happiness in their lives. Everyone tries by one way or another to fulfill this need, and most of the time by ways that do NOT really lead to more happiness. If you think you need anything else to be happy (money, fame, power, affection)... think again.
You’re a complex, beautiful, and miraculous person. You probably have heard that before, but do you know it? Do you know it as if you saw it, as if you felt it? Meditation will help you discover all things about yourself. You’ll become more aware of your thoughts and how they direct your actions and beliefs, be more in tune with your feelings and nurture positive emotions (joy, love, happiness), and increasingly feel more deeply any sensations; eating an apple will become a pure delight.
The mind is the master of all our thoughts, emotions, and sensations. By becoming it’s friend and observing it during meditation, you will learn things about life and yourself that would not be possible through books and classes.
Right now, you engage in many unhealthy habits that impact your body, such as eating fast-food, exercising too much or not enough, getting frustrated over little things, accumulating stress, etc. Every habit that you have stays there because...you are still not aware of how badly they impact your health.
By meditating regularly, you will see clear changes in your habits in terms of thoughts, emotions, and physical actions. Why? Because meditation increases your awareness of how things you do affect you. When you eat a greasy pizza, it won’t take long before you feel the complains of your stomach. When you become angry, you'll see how uncomfortable that emotions feels in the body and wish for it to be over soon. Meditation will help you feel and live all of your bad habits, so you can learn from them...and avoid doing them so often.
As Maslow stated, we all follow a hierarchy of needs in our life: physiological -> safety -> love/belonging -> esteem -> self-actualization. We fulfill our basic needs first so we can move up the latter until we reach our full potential also known as “self-actualization”.
As you're reading this, I can assume that you have met at least the 2 first steps of physiological and safety needs. Actually most of us do, but what about the other needs left? Some of us will fulfill them during adolescence, others during young adulthood, but most of us will take a lifetime...or maybe not even reach...self-actualization.
This level of need is the desire to accomplish everything that one can, to become the most that one can be. Meditation is a fast track to going through all of those needs and reach self-actualization, mastering what one can achieve best in this life.
We provide a meditation group every week, and take personal request to try out meditation. We also do live facebook sessions of breathing meditation at noon, every working day. Check out our services and facebook page for more information. For any questions, feel free to contact us.
